Program Elements
Literacy
Students, on average, progress 6-10 weeks in reading over the summer in small classroom settings with ratios of 3:1. Our literacy instruction combines skill-building with engaging projects that make reading and writing come alive.
STEM
Students engage in hands-on project-based curriculum in coding, robotics, drones, and 3D printing. They also network with STEM and other career professionals who expose them to fields with which they may be unfamiliar and help spark new interests.
Swimming
Most students join Horizons unable to swim, many afraid of the water. Through our comprehensive aquatics program, 100% of students learn to swim by summer's end. The skills learned in the pool—perseverance and overcoming fears—translate to greater confidence in the classroom.
Healthy Living
Students have access to free healthy food, help maintain the host school's rooftop garden, volunteer to care for Branch Brook Park, play sports, and develop lifelong wellness habits.
Theater Arts
Through our expanded theater arts program and new partnership with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), students develop self-expression, teamwork, and performance skills while building confidence on stage. From dramatic storytelling to spoken word to musical numbers, students strengthen their public speaking abilities and emotional awareness while bringing stories to life.
Chess
Through our new partner, AlphaMinds Academy, students learn strategic thinking and problem-solving through the timeless game of chess. This program develops critical thinking skills, patience, and the ability to plan ahead – abilities that translate to academic and life success.
Financial Literacy
Students are empowered to understand money management through interactive, project-based, age-appropriate lessons that cover saving, budgeting, and basic investment concepts. This essential life skill prepares them for future financial success.
Golf
Through our partnership with First Tee, our golf program introduces students to a sport that builds focus, discipline, and etiquette. Beyond learning swing techniques, students discover valuable lessons about patience and precision while gaining exposure to a lifetime sport.
Social-Emotional Learning
All students participate in mindfulness classes and learn emotional regulation through a standard SEL curriculum. A dedicated social worker meets with students in small groups or individually, and also connects families to local resources like rent and food assistance when needed.
